Nilova Pustin - Russian Orthodox Monasteries Series

This huge Orthodox abbey is located on the island on lake Seliger in Tver region in Russia.

This monastery had very long history since 16th century, when Nil Stolobensky decided to settle on the island of Stolbny to seek silence and solitude for praying.
Pustin in Russian language means empty place, which is natural rescue for monks
In 19th Century monastery turned to its peak of popularity, just the fact that one of the Isaac temples projects, that was rejected by trustee board - this famous architectural design was implemented in Nilova Pustin
In earlier Soviet era, monastery was the place of MKVD gulag, where Polish officers were placed before there execution in Mednoye, the village near Tver.
Since earlier 1970th monastery was in reconstruction program, and now it is still in progress Our photograph was made in late November 2007
