Lake Seliger Sobenskie Ozera Protoka: absolutely gorgeous photo December 2007

I you are English speaking person, living or visiting Russia, we would like to introduce to the one the really sacred places in Russian North West, where Tverskaya oblast borders with Novgorodchina - lake Seliger. This place is similar to the Mecca to Muslim palomnics, we Russians consider Seliger as the the place where Volga River begins and where summer vacation is the most appropriate: lake fishing, swimming, boating, religion (Nilova Pustin, Kravotin, Ostashkov, Zaluchie, Uvitsi, Novinki, Volgoverkhovie). Let's come back to the photo presented
1. Protoka in Russian is ancient ships transfer place over the land strip. This volok is really medieval or even ancient - attributable to Novgorod Republic back to 13-15th centuries. Novgorod Republic really lost its power when Ivan the Terrible massacred Novgorod man population in 16th century. Protoka to Sobenskie lakes was in fact ancient Volok for Novgorod tradesmen, who were returning back to Novgorod from Tatar Orda or Ukrain
2. How to get there. Well, today we can relay on asphalt roads, and if you are renting and driving car from Moscow, please consider two routes - one is Moscow-Riga highway, then in Rzhev you turn toward Selizharovo/Ostashkov. The second way is Leningradskoye Shosse to Tver, then to Torzhok and through Kuvshinovo to Ostashkov
