Ozero Seliger, how to get there and what to see - Lake Seliger for Foreigners
 Evdokim Petrov
Lake Seliger with its capital Ostashkov and gem Volgoverkhovie, where Volga river takes its beginning is the place on Valdai highlands you must to consider to visit.
 1. To get there from Moscow. You have two alternatives. We recommend you to take Moscow Riga freeway to Volokolamsk, also known as new Volokolamskoye shosse, then keep driving to Shakhovskaya and then Zubcov and Rzhev, in Rzhev come across the city center and follow north to Selizharovo and Ostashkov, in Ostashkov follow the directions west to Volgoverkhovie. Second alternative is through Tver, Torzhok, Kuvshinovo to Ostashkov, this route has slightly more traffic lights, but if it is easier for you to take Sp Petersburg direction from Moscow, you can try it as well
2. Recreation on Lake Seliger. Please, consider to have either your own tents or try to book room in Khizhina (close to Nikolo Rozhok) or Vershina Seligera (close to Svapushe and Zaluchie Bereovski Ples and Sobenskie Ozera). Please try to make your tent vacation in later June, July or early August, as the rest of the year and season might be too cold and water may be not appropriate for swimming
3. Nilova Pustin Monastery. This is gorgeous and huge Russian Orthodox church monastery. Please consider driving there - turn Svetlitsa three kilometers before reaching Ostashkov from the east
4. Volgoverkhovie. This place, where Volga river begins has astonishing red brick dome, built in 1912.
5. Krovotin Village and Church. This settlement is seen from Nilova Pistin if your boat turns into Kravotinski Ples and from the North, from Zaplavski ples. If you were driving to Nilova Pustin, you can turn right to Kravotin, before Svetlitsa. This church was built in Paul I time and it is in essence transformation from baroc to neo classicism
