Crystal Reports for Custom Databases: Alba Spectrum

If you have ODBC compliant DB application, where Database platform might be one of the many: Microsoft SQL Server 2005/2008/2000, Oracle, mySQL, Microsoft Access, Pervasive SQL, Ctree - you may consider CR as the way to go. Before you jump into the Crystal waters, please be sure, that your ERP, MRP or software selected doesn't have dedicated Report Writer - in the case of Microsoft Dynamics GP it is Great Plains ReportWriter for managerial reporting and FRx for financial reporting (Balance Sheet, P&L and consolidated financial reports). 1. DB Query. Well, here we have to discourage you from overtrusting to CR design wizard, where it links directly to Database in CR. Crystal Reports is rather reporting tool, which does perfect job in reporting, but you should not expect reporting tool to replace complex SQL mechanisms, such as SQL View and Stored Procedures (in we are using Microsoft SQL Server technical terminology). Or at least consider the way out, when your Crystal Reports produces duplicate lines - instead of deploying Wizard, outsource DB SQL Select statement to SQL View or Stored Procedure and you will see that the fix is not that complex
2. Crystal Reporting realm. Typically CR is the tool of choice in such areas as Managerial Reporting, heterogeneous data selection (Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, mySQL, tab and comma delimited text files). If you are thinking about deploying CR Designer for financial reports, try to look at the other options
